Jersey Beat was one of the first magazines I was lucky enough to get my hands on back in the halcyon days of 1999, and I was lucky enough to receive this copy. For some reason, the magic that I felt that I was holding in that earlier issue of the zine really seems to have dissipated. Where the older issue seems to be more personal and experience oriented, I felt that this newer issue was about music firstly and if they had time, personal experience. A large part of this issue details the similiarities and differences between the New Jersey and Williamsburg scene, as well as delves into why so few bands are currently staying in New Jersey. After the opening pieces and columns about the scenes, the zine goes into pretty much a review/interview zine for about 40 or 50 pages. Typical interviews with the Realistics, Submission Hold, Fixer, and Drive Thru Records are to be found to no one's surprise, but relative newcomers Double Breasted and Tear It Up try to keep it interesting. Call me a traditionalist, but more personality will always put a zine over one that primarily focuses on just music.
