Narcolepsy Press Review #5

via Blackguard on 4/29/10

[24 pages, digest size, $3.00, Randy Robbins, PO Box 17131, Anaheim CA 92817-7131, USA narcolepsypresszine at hotmail dot com ]
I read about this zine in either Zine World or Xerography Debt, or both. Randy's last issue was about his heart transplant, and that he figured that was a pretty good excuse for being late with his new issue. I figure that just about beats any other excuse you could come up with.
As the title suggests, this is a review zine, got loads of personality, really cut and paste style, it's got that great hand-made quality. Most of the issue is taken up with letters from other ziners and readers, comments about Randy's surgery (and the fact he had to take 20 pills a day after the transplant, holy shit!) among other things. There's a ton of letters from prisoners. (That *Free to Prisoners* thing doesn't seem to exist here in Australia, wonder why that is? I do understand that the US loves putting people in prison however, and it's one of the biggest industries in the world. I saw a really eye-popping doco some years back about a private prison-building company called *Wackenhut* - really, you couldn't make this shit up if you tried...) There's a bunch of reviews at the back, but next issue is promised to contain a shitload more. Also in here are drawings by Randy's kids Tabitha and Tanner, which are real cute! Also included in every issue, Randy prints quotes from various sources attacking organised religion. Example, this one from Frank Zappa: "The essence of Christianity is told us in the Garden of Eden story. The subtext is, All the suffering you have is because you wanted to know what was going on. You could be in the Garden of Eden if you had just kept your fucking mouth shut and hadn't asked any questions."
I really like this zine and will try to get the back issues as well as the forward issues.
