CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS ON ADDICTION AND RECOVERYSubstance: On Addiction and Recovery is a collection of peoples' experiences with addiction and recovery in radical and/or marginalized communities. Not just a text to break the silence, Substance is an opportunity for those affected by substance abuse to make meaning of our lives and create opportunities for lasting social change. Substance: On Addiction and Recovery will be a book that transcends the mainstream discourse regarding addiction and recovery and forges new pathways towards healing and the reclamation of our lives.
I am open to essays, poetry, personal narratives, photography, art, comics, collage, and more.

Potential topics:
• personal narratives of addiction and/or recovery • support groups • radical sobriety • harm reduction • silence and stigma • withdrawal and detoxification • the intersections of race/class/sexual orientation/gender identity/disability status and addiction • creating and sustaining community support networks • how addiction intersects with activism, sexuality, health, sexual and intimate partner violence, mental illness, privilege, oppression, identity, capitalism, the state, work, and

In addition to pieces by individuals, I'd like to include a few pieces about the work that community-based groups have done to address the politics of addiction and recovery and to support those dealing with substance abuse. If you are a member of such a group, please feel free to write.

A terrific little reviewzine whose mission is to "Promote authentic DIY production and cultural engineering. Provide contacts to increase the nodal connection in the underground to the point of infinite iteration."
Every zine reviewed has a real actual physical contact address. Not one email address or URL to be found. I love that. (Although it makes me wonder if Jason would object to my reviewing his zine here.)
Most of these zines I've never heard of - they never get reviewed in XD or ZW anyway - so MJ is a great discovery for me.

As the first 'queer comic zine' I've ever seen, this one defied my expectations. I'll be honest, I expected more sex. At least some drawings of cocks. Then I remembered this part from the interview with the Queer Zine Archive Project contained within - "Queer zines are (typically) more racy than non-queer zines. They tend to be about sex, sexuality and gender, and consequently take more chances than some other zines." But the contents of Homobody, if I had to sum it up in one word, would be 'coy.' Take the longest comic story in here for example. One young guy picks another guy up on the street and takes him back to his place. They get their shirts off, then the other guy admits he just wants to crash until the punk show that night.
Well, this zine isn't targeted at me anyway. But if I was a young queer dude I'd be ordering all the back issues of Homobody for sure.
Along with comix, illos and the previously mentioned interview with QZAP, there's also an interview with Robert Triptow, editor of Gay Comix in the early 1980s, and a few reviews (two zines and one unpublished 'young adult' novel).
The zine has a cool and easy to read layout, and I really dig the cover which is hand spray-painted with red paint on xeroxed yellow card.

Unfortunately I can't read Spanish and so I missed out on what appears to be an amazing hardcore punk zine. I recently gave a power point presentation about zines to a group of high school kids at the University of Idaho, I took this zine with me as an example of the cultural and artistic diversity present in the world of zines. I passed this zine and a few others around and let the kids look through them as I talked. They all seemed to be really into this one based simply on its aesthetic appearance. This zine looks cool, really cool. It has interviews with Bad Brains, Mob 47, Sotatila, Antimaster, and a host of other bands. It's got reviews, columns, and tons of great pictures of bands tearing it up live. If you are into punk zines and are hip to the Spanish language, you need this zine. It comes with a bunch of stickers and a split CD from the bands Almax (which the author screams in), Mistkafer, and Down to Agony.

Sprak! is a Sexploitation, B-Movie, Trash, Horror, movie review zine from Australia. I've always been curious about these genres of movies but personally have only really scratched the surface with movies like Pink Flamingos, Blackula, Death Race 2000, and a few others that I've randomly been exposed to over the years. Reading Sprak! Is a wild, somewhat naughty introduction to this seedy underbelly of cinema and art from someone who is freakishly passionate and knowledgeable about it all. With titles like, Cockhammer, The Sinful Dwarf, and the Satanic Rites of Draccula how couldn't a person be at least a little curious?

This is a short poetry/philosophical musing/perzine that wanders around and explores the author's consciousness, former lovers, issues, and ideas. Its cut and paste and full of disjointed images and clip art that mimic the tone of the writing. Because I haven't read any of the previous issues, I didn't have much context for the stories and poems, and so I often felt out of the loop while reading it. This is an unfortunate byproduct of jumping into someone else's perzine six issues in. I'm curious for more.

Here's my 24 Hr Zine effort-- a prose poem called SHORT RATIONS. This is not the usual sort of thing I write, and I had fun with it... In fact, I wouldn't mind doing something like this again in the future--something fast and spontaneous and somewhat strange.It's pretty small-- about, I don't know, ten pages or so.
