I just received in the mail the massive 64 page mag size issue of Small Press EXTRA (SPE) #5 from TruFan Publications. I was one of the 10 lucky people to get a full color copy. That means not just color on the covers, but all the way though! Some snafu at the printer and they got 10 like this. I was lucky enough to snag one! Wow! I'm assuming everyone else gets full color covers, with black and white interiors. Still this is one fantastic small press review and news zine! And I'm borrowing this review from old time small presser (he is my age), Steve Keeter. (Until he tells me to take it down.) --AF

Just received my copy of SPE #5, and it is awesome. Cover to cover,
a stellar issue, beautifully laid out, loaded with info of interest
to your average small press maniac, great writing and great photos
and artwork throughout.

If you haven't guessed it by now, I really liked this issue!
The second part of the interview with Jim Main was the highlight, at
least for this old fan, as I greatly enjoy reading his thoughts on
small press history. Also, his plans for publishing are just
staggering, as is his amazing energy... especially considering the
problems he had with his health just a short time ago. The man is a
powerhouse, unstoppable, the best of the best, a true legend of
small press publishing.

Allen Freeman's unexpected (so soon after the event! Talk about
breaking news!) report on SPACE 2007, was very much appreciated,
very informative, and the pix were really nice. Dan Taylor seems
like a guy I'd like to meet (and hopefully will, next year, if I can
make it up there). Hey, is Larned Justin really short or is
the "unknown comic fan" just really tall? I see Tim Corrigan has
grown his hair out again...

It was good to see another take on MegaCon by Jim Pike. Really glad
that he did well with the Superior Man comics this year. He's
building a steady fan base, learning as he goes, (and I learned
quite a bit, this year, from listening to him recount his
experiences selling and promoting small press at the convention) and
can definitely include ol skeet in that list of fans.

Lovecraft! I'd heard about his participation in the amateur press
before, but you included an actual sample of his small press work!
And an intriguing text from one of his speeches. Great stuff!
Congratulations on outdoing yourself, o' Great and Mighty Gaffsam.
Looking forward to the next issue.

HUMPDAY

HUMPDAY by Adam Buechler

HUMPDAY is a great concept with great art to back it up. Adam Buechler has a nice style that works very well here. Just enough detail to keep the story moving along. And the story is very well done. And dare I say it "original"? Or seems to be to me. From the Press Release that Adam sent with the comic: The comic centers on a pair of blue-collar guys, an American "Dog-catcher" team working in Paris in the near future. Like manyother zombie books, it is a time where the undead roam freely, and as a result, the undead tourists have become a nuisance and an embarrassment for their homelands. They've taken over popular vacation destinations and as a result, their respective countries have sent in teams to remove them from the city. The comic is not really a horror story or even a zombie story, but more of a comedic tale about the mundane day-in and day-out of the working class. The tense or scary scenes in the comic are dealt with as though they are just everyday occurrences (which they are, of course) for the characters. Nothing out of the ordinary and really rather dull.

That said I was drawn into the story and would love to see more from Adam soon. 24 pages, digest, color cover, thick paper stock and great printing quality throughout. No price on the cover? Also I love the intro page but you should have something on the inside covers if you can, and especially on the back cover, which he chose to leave blank. Maybe talk about your other projects or something about issue #2 or perhaps the main characters in a nice pose?

I give this 4.5 stars. Adam made a common small press mistake, he didn't print any credits or contact info in the comic. You should do that to make sure people can contact you for letters of comment, or to order more of your books! Add a web site address if you can and an email address for sure. Getting feedback is important and so is selling more books! You could even get someone that likes your art and want to hire you for something so don't miss an oportunity!

Tiki Comix is a digest with a color wrap-around cover by Michael Roden. Michael also does most of the interior pages of crazy TIKI Gods like in "Tiki Surf Party!" a one pager done with Mike Mitchell. No real stories to speak of, just wild art involving a TIKI God. Art also by Brad W. Foster who does a very nice "TIKIMAN" inside cover pinup, and some of the usual Rodenites like Bob "X", Jeff Gaither, Jim Thompson, Tom Brinkmann, Andy Nukes etc....well worth a look if you like wacked out crazy, scary cartoonish, realistic mayhem. Greetings from ...Tiki Man was like an old photo album of Tiki Man, funny! You know these guys are having fun! About 20 pages counting the covers which are printed on the inside.

Dodo B is a riot grrrl writing from Germany. There’s a little bit of everything in here: music, politics, angst, introspection, interviews, song lyrics, quotes, doodles and art. Nothing profound, and a lot of what you might expect, but it’s delivered with honest, raw, vibrant, urgency. My favorite bit was musings on questions of feminism in the mosh pit. Great cover art. I think the target audience will appreciate it. Next time use staples.

This is a reprint (2001) of a single-issue publication, offered up by Microcosm, and it’s exactly what the title says. Mostly prose with a handful of comics. Very nicely done, beautiful cover art, and looks like 25 or so contributors. What’s best about this is the topic invites a lighthearted vulnerability you don’t often see from such a diverse group in concert very often.

This is the “zine for girls who love to wet their nickers, boys who like to imagine it, and anyone else interested." Horny Brit girls peeing, masturbating and having girl-girl sex, all in public. Unintentionally funny, (I think,) though I was alarmed by some of the exploits; I'll never again use public transportation, or public photobooths, or public anything. Gluesticked together like a middle school newsletter; drawings, blocks of text, words snipped from magazines, and a few original photos; corner stapled and edited in pencil. There's a bunch of four line poems that when read in succession are absolutely hilarious, punctuated by clipped words like, "warm front," and, "instant relief." Fan mail from pervs in poetry form. I'm... uh... luke-warm about the subject matter but it's good to know there are horny girls out there somewhere doing naughty things.

Nicely written. A bittersweet coming-of-middle-age story about a nostalgic jaunt to the old haunt, (SF's Tenderloin.) Dark, vivid, poetic, honest, rambling. "Every bar has it's share of dirty old men..... The Korean bar girl struts up and down, working that bar, flimsy silk nighty for a top... sweet perfume scented, all smiles and light brushes across the hand like a feather as they hand you your change..... The creepy old men wiggle like hooked worms on their seats, barely able to contain themselves."

Tim Corrigan's Comics and Stories #2 and #3. New Voice Publishing. "It's the Small Press Age of Comics!" is proudly announced at the bottom of these comics. (12 page digest, black and white comics.) And it is true! #2 starts with part 1 of "The Big Book Signing!" and stars Mightyguy. The publishers Fred and Marvin along with MightyGuy go and set up their booth to sell their comics at Bilbo Bagpipe's Big Shop of Comics. Well drawn, funny and is that a cameo of Tim as the bartender? Looks like it. This story is continued and there is a Mr. Doodle 3 page story in the back. Wow, that's a lot of work for $1. *****5 stars out of 5. Great work at a very great price. Get #3 as it continues the story. Will MightyGuy get angry and jump into the action? Read it and see. I only work when I want to, I'm not trying to compete, I'm allowing summer breezes to sweep across my arms in the dark walking home. Across town, I bought a pink iPod off of Craigs List and laughed when I didn't get lost. I drove my friend to the airport last night where her plane is taking her to Germany for an entire year. I'm writing this zine, I'm reading fiction for fun, and checking out comics from the library. I try not to be afraid of global warming, nuclear war, or my own mental illness. I try not to be afraid for gay rights or future generations. In the past three years fear has been consuming me. Not only had it built a house on fine real estate, in those juicy gray curves of my brain, it also left my mouth and controlled all my limbs. It lived in my intestinal tract, an undiagnosable form of irritable bowel syndrome - uncomfortable and embarrassing. It cramped down on my social skills. It wouldn't let me break up with my ex-girlfriends, it addicted me to SAT courses and colleges out of fear that someone would find me out of fuck me over. I can't wait any longer for it. I can't tense up my shoulders and close my eyes and wait for someone to jump out and attack. fuck it. I hit the gym. four or five times a week. it was the only way for me to sweat fear out of my system..."

THRU BLACK HOLES COMIX have been coming out from artist publisher Michael R. Roden for years! Since the early 70's for sure. Mike sent me HALLOWEEN #7 a 20 page digest with some creepy, crazy artwork by Mike Roden, Tom Brinkmann, Mike Mitchell, Jim Thompson, Brad W. Foster, Jeff Gaither and other folks that like creepy crawling skulls, beasts, and things that go bumping down your stairs at night. All comics with just a hint of a story here or there but still worth the price of admission. Well, I think it's worth it as he doesn't put a price on his books that I can find. Matt Feazell has been putting out The Amazing Cynicalman (America's Laid Off Superhero) for years. He also puts out a lot of other mini comics as well. He has a very funny stick-man style. Matt can really draw detailed comic work but prefers this stick style that he has become famous for. He has also worked on comics such as ZOT and Ant-Boy. Weird MUSE #3, by Dan W. Taylor. 4.25' tall x 5.5' wide, cream cardstock cover, black and white printing. 8 interior pages. I guess this is rated PG-13 as there are some breasts here and there...First we have a nice little into page with nice art (and breasts), then we go to DAN's Wife's Page....some nice home cleaning tips, and a recipe, oh and a nice photo of some kittens. Then we bet to the comic by Dan: The Weird Muse in Think Twice & Be Nice. Nice art and story. Love the gray tones as well. (More comic breasts, she is a GODDESS for gosh sakes.). And we learn an important lesson in the end! Another great little comic by DAN!
(5 stars) They just keep getting better, but I want more!
