In These Times (May 9, 2005) / $2.95 / :35 / 44M / http://www.inthesetimes.com / 308 E. Hitt St, Mt. Morris, IL 61054 /

Most people are familiar with In These Times, have seen it around their libraries or at the free pile at shows. How many have actually picked a copy up and read through it? Before this issue, I had picked up a few issues but only glanced at it, and I honestly feel bad because this is the best mass-market, progressive zine out of the market. The Progressive is a little too detached from the lifeforce of the movement, and The Nation has a stuffy, all-knowing tone in its writing, but In These Times despite the larger publication numbers is still walking alongside the revolutionaries. In this issue, the bucking of the international system by Latin American countries shows that individuals are finally wresting back control of their futures after heavy-handed American influence in the region for over a hundred years. The dirty tricks played by politicians come to cause problems for Andres Obrador, a contender for the Mexican presidency and a detailed synopsis of the current successes enjoyed by the conservative movement in the United States offers a compelling model for progressives to work under. In These Times does not paint BushCo with the same "monkey" image that many progressives are apt to accept; by trying to understand one's enemy, an individual can stand up and win significant victories against them. Issues of In These Times can pretty much be found everywhere, whether the normal $2.95 or even free, this zine should be searched for and dissected much like those frogs that got the chop-chop in high school biology labs worldwide.
