Stratu’s Diary Comix March-April (self-published, 2017) ***¼

[Review by Dann Lennard - originally appeared 4 June 2017 at his blog Kirby Your Enthusiasm]
I love Stu and this is a fascinating exercise of self-discipline, but the cupboard is bare when it comes to intellectual or entertaining reading material. Friending and blocking people on Instagram, internet shopping, TV shows or films he’s watched, vaping...there’s just not a lot of depth in what’s purportedly a “diary”. And I understand that dilemma – when I briefly did my own diary comic last year, I gave up because I was unwilling to share my most intimate thoughts to strangers. So what I was left with was the mediocre, mundane (and occasionally interesting) minutae of day-to-day living. The few times Stu explores more personal territory – like hanging out with his aunt or talking about how a certain person has let him down or helped him or whatever, then the zine gets more interesting. But those moments are a few and far between. That said, I did appreciate Stu’s mention of Seoul Station (the anime prequel to the excellent South Korean zombie flick Train To Busun. It encouraged me to buy it). I appreciate Stu’s work ethic and artwork (the personalised cover on the March issue was lovely). I note that he’s changed the format for April, turning it into an A6 digest (maybe for monetary reasons?). Either way, this zine is fine if you’re a friend of Stu’s and want to know how he keeps himself busy every day, but I wish it was so much more.

Stuart Stratu is our friend and Australian correspondent. He is also the man behind the Blackguard Comix series. Every day in 2015,Stuart is chronicling his life with a three frame comic.

This issue covers his adversarial relationship with the local schlock radio station, his daily crosswords, Witcher III, his mental check list of to dos that he hasn't done, Rocco's 3rd birthday with Gumby cake, Dean Martin, and more shitty FM radio and crosswords. Not so much beer in this issue. One of my favorite things about these comics is the way he depicts his parents and his relationship with them. His father has dementia, and he's getting worse. Stu tries to keep things light, and he succeeds for the most part, but you cannot avoid witnessing the slow incremental loss that comes with Altheimer's. His painting himself as clownish does not hide his pain, nor the sweetness of his devotion to his parents.

Well done Stuart. Definitely one of the coolest and most welcome things I receive in the mail.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading these. Though we've known each other peripherally through zines and comics for some time now, I really knew very little about him. I feel like I know him much better now, and that's a good thing because he is interesting and likable.

Beer is a steady theme throughout. His father has Altheimer's and Stu visits him frequently and takes him places, taking it in stride and keeping a sense of humor. He obsesses over job opertunities and gets letters from prisoners. I thought it was funny when someone had an "American" themed party where they had hot dogs and hamburgers.

Totally worth it.

Stuart Stratu

I started publishing my own comics anthology [Sick Puppy Comix] back in 1996. It wasn't only full of depraved comix from Australia, USA, Canada, and the Netherlands, but a big comix and zine reviews section. I loved writing about this stuff as much as I loved creating it and trading it with others through the mail.

Anyway, thirteen issues of Sick Puppy later I felt burnt out on zines so took a five year break, then came back in 2008 with a new 'themed' comix anthology, Blackguard. The first issue was the Religious Crazies issue. Then came the Father issue, then Crime, then Fear, then Science. Blackguard is on hold right now since I began in 2013 [along with comics pal David Puckeridge] these what we called 'Diary Comics Challenges'.

The whole time, of course, I've written about zines. And I love to drink beer. I love to drink beer and review comics and zines!
