I came home with a foreigner Saturday night

I came home with a foreigner Saturday night
by Jeremy Dixon / Hazard Press

A6, eight pages, Limted edition of 100, colour print, hand stitched.

£4 (free p&p)

I am a huge fan of found art and found writing. One of my favourite zines of the early 2000's was Found magazine, I included a monthly found poetry column in The Fix (now no more, but at the time the UK's first stand up comedy magazine), and my live interactive show Choose Your Own Documentary centres around four pages of a diary found between the pages of a second hand book. So, even before opening this up, I knew I was going to like it.

I came home with a foreigner Saturday night reproduces a photographic portrait of a man taken sometime around 1910-1919, and a handwritten entry scrawled on the back. Because its tricky to decipher the handwriting, the text has also been translated into type, and in the process has become poetry.

The poem is pregnant with desire, promise and hope. And like all found writing is riddled with questions - the who, what, where - but also 'what happened next?'. It is this fragment of time lost that gives this little book its power.

my recent graffiti research by Laura-Marie

I got some art in the mail, and it includes the slogan Demand the Impossible, which I love, so I googled it and came up with a bunch of revolutionary graffiti. It was fascinating. So I read through a lot of it and made a found poem out of my favorites.

Then today I wanted to see more graffiti quotes so I googled the same and came up with some wonderful ones. I looked through hundreds of images of graffiti until I got tired.

But I doubt my search is over. I have a true love of the transgressive communication that is good graffiti. I would never do it myself, but I'm glad other people are brave enough to break the law just to say something to me.

Lost Cat

via FOUND Magazine on 10/18/09
I saw about 5 or 6 of these posted near the corner of Broome St. and Broadway. Oddly none had any contact information included. It turns out that this was written on the back side of a flier for a Psychic Shop. So, will the psychic know the number of the person who finds the cat? But really, if you're a psychic can you even lose a cat?

I Just Wanna Make Out

via FOUND Magazine on 10/6/09
I found this napkin on the sidewalk in southeast Portland. I've never heard of the Break Time Sports Grill & Pub, and was pretty sure it wasn't in my neighborhood. When I Googled it, this bar is in Salisbury, Maryland! This napkin traveled all the way across the United States only to be dropped on the sidewalk!

Anti-Cthulhu PSA for young netizens

via Boing Boing by Cory Doctorow on 9/24/09

I don't know anything about this PSA advising young people to stay away from chat rooms lest the cute boy on the other end turn out to be Cthulhu, waiting to take their sanity, but I certainly support its message.

The Gel Pen Club

via FOUND Magazine on 9/1/09
I found this at a local thrift store inside a 101 Dalmatians pencil case. I only picked it up since it was a case similar to one I used to own, and decided to look inside for no particular reason but nostalgia. I found this and a few other papers inside, the others reading "Gel pen Club."

After the Computers

via FOUND Magazine on 8/31/09
This note was found next to one of the public internet computers at the Taunton Public Library. The patron that was using the computer around the time the note was found was known to have some anger issues, and he just happened to be accompanied by a female friend of his.

Found this waiting in line at a drugstore. The fisherman looks very devious. It scares me that the fish can still think after it's dead.

I found this in the elementary school parking lot. I don't think this note is about this parking lot, but probably related to the apartment complex that is a couple blocks away from the school.

I found this napkin eating lunch one day about a month before Appalachian State University let out for winter break. I needed a napkin and this was under the one I picked up.

My husband found this laminated flier hanging up on the campus of Ball State University. This same picture with more details was posted in the classifieds section of the Muncie Star Press under Lost & Found. The owners must have really cared for their pet skunk as they apparently had its picture taken professionally. I hope they found him/her.

I found this in my NY Public Library Book. The book was the Complete Candida Yeast Guidebook - which might make it more creepy. I thought one of my coworkers had drawn it and stuck it in the book because we have conversations about how scary bedbugs are sometimes.
