Zine World #31

Zine World #31

ZW 31 ZW31 p9
28 pages, 11" x 8.5", Single Issue: $4.00 US, $5.00 Canada/Mexico, $7.00 Worldwide Subscription $10.00 for 3 issues US, $13 Canada/Mexico, $18.00 Worldwide >>> New Address! PO Box 3556, Portland OR 97208, USA + jerianne [at] undergroundpress.org + www.undergroundpress.org
First of all, this issue features the most awesome stunning cover of any ZW to date. I can't find a credit for it though. Whoever was responsible, don't let 'em go!
Second of all, I flip to page three - the first page of the letter column - and the first (and it's a long one) letter is from Elihu Edelson, editor of Both Sides Now zine. Man, he really rips into ZW reviewer Ryan Mishap over his review of BSN last issue. To Jerianne's credit, she defends Mishap in her reply, admitting that not everybody is gonna give your zine a glowing review, and that's why her policy is to hand out one person's zine to a different reviewer each time to get different perspectives. Anyway, so ZW31 gets off to a pretty exciting and dramatic start, which is soon followed by an excellent (and another long) letter from zinester James N. Dawson who fires a few shots of his own at overly precious and sensitive zinemakers. A great letter.
Another thing I noticed going back through this issue on the bus after work this afternoon (yeah I've had it for at least a month, but you know, nobody is surprised it takes some of us a while to get around to this stuff...) is how many reviewed zines I circled and emailed asking for trades, or just how to get a copy, but the shitty thing is most haven't even bothered to write back. What the fuck is up with that? I get an email from somebody wanting a copy of Blackguard or Grunted Warning and I write back as soon as I see it, man. Maybe it's because I live in Australia and these Americans think it might as well be four or five planets out from Earth. "Yikes! Australia? I don't think I can do that. ... Australia? ..." etc. whatever they think... Yes, I'm bitter! You send your damn zine out, so let's go crazy and assume you want other people to read it, right? Well, you might consider answering them when they write to you. If not, quit making zines and fuck off.
Ahem. OK now that's out of my system. Heh heh!
Another cool thing about ZW is the reprints of illustrations and stuff from zines reviewed. And the free classifieds are really great. Who has free classifieds? Nobody else, that's who.

P.S. Can you see images for ZW at the top or just thin strips? I'm serious. Something weird is going on with LiveJournal...

Zine World #29

Zine World #29

[36 pages, magazine size, $4.00US, $5.00 Canada, $7.00 World, edited by Jerianne, PO Box 330156, Murfreesboro TN 37133, USA +++ www.undergroundpress.org +++ jerianne (at) undergroundpress.org ]
Blow the trumpets, the latest issue of Zine World has arrived!
Jerianne has changed a long-standing policy starting from this issue, namely the policy of only reviewing zines that include a real actual physical address. Zine publishers are divided over this, one reason being that it would be the height of irony to have a paperzine full of email and web addresses, but since more and more zine publishers are only including email addresses, the policy needed to be changed to cover the full spectrum of zines being produced.
Next up is a terrific discussion on the term 'zinester' that was started by Craven Rock (Eaves of Ass zine) on the We Make Zines forum. Craven has big problems with this term, feeling that the term is limiting and these days more likely to describe a person who self publishes zines about making out, riding bikes and polyamory. Craven's initial post is reprinted, including some excellent (and provocative) comments like this one ( that I completely agree with):
"It's also the zinester philosophy that's been pushing the idea that making a zine is the highest good, no matter what the quality, and that everyone should be making one no matter what. Teaching make-a-zine-in-an-hour workshops that encourage people to lower the bar. Fuck that! You should be making a zine if you have something to say."
Excerpts from this discussion follow. The responses included are all considered and eloquent.
The bulk of Zine World of course is the dozens and dozens of zine reviews. These are arranged alphabetically with the reviewer's byline at the end (as opposed to Xerography Debt that has a separate section for each reviewer). Reviewers in this issue: Andrew Mall, Anu, Chantel G., clint johns, Clinto, Dann Lennard, e. war, Heath Row, Jaina Bee, Jerianne, Josh Blair, Karlos the jackal, Katie, Kris, MC, P.5!, Ryan Mishap, Stephanie K., Stephanos, and Tom Hendricks. Artists: Androo (cover), David Crockett and Lydia Velarde.
There's a Resources section that lists zine libraries, review zines, news of USPS postage increase proposal (we just had one here in Australia, consarn it), and change of address notifications.
Then there's a really cool article, 'Everything You Wanted to Know About a Zine Fest (But Were Afraid to Ask)' by Nicole Introvert.
ZW29 closes with the regular Classifieds section which is really cool since listings are free!
Zine World rocks. It deserves your support.

Somnambulist Zine

via Somnambulist Zine by martha grover on 4/6/08
Somnambulist #9: A nicely organized perzine from Portland. Naturally, each
story found here draws directly from the personal experiences of its
respective authors, but does so in a fresh and inventive way. Publisher
Martha Grover provides most of the material and uses her cheese-selling
grocery gig as a basis for her work. Grover's an ace in creative writing
and her use of visuals is stunning. If you like introspective literature
you should check this out. [:25] –Chris Manic •••SECOND OPINION: Stories
about going to the doctor and the dentist, if evolution works so well why
are there still ugly people, a conversation with Peter Bauer (who opted
for a hunter-gatherer lifestyle), and a couple others. Mildly
entertaining. Martha Grover, PO Box 14871, Portland OR 97293,

American Gun Culture Report #1.1

American Gun Culture Report #1.1
52 pages digest
$2

Editor Ross Elliot blasts a big hole in the left-vs-right facade of American thinking by showing gun culture for what it really is; diverse as hell. "In reality, many shooters vote Democrat, Libertarian, Green, and Socialist. Many belong to the ACLU, Amnesty International, and environmental groups as well....." Elliot is concerned about our individual rights being eroded away, and is sick of the gun culture's complicity in being co-opted by government thugs. In-depth and thoughtful journalism, serious enough to come with an extensive bibliography. Outstanding.

RIP Murder Can Be Fun?

via Zine World by admin on 4/8/08

Zine World HQ recently received Murder Can Be Fun #20, with an enclosed note saying it "will probably prove to be my final issue." MCBF is one of those classic zines that us old-school zine folks drool over, the epitome of the 'quirky' zine, about weird and bizarre stories of death & mishap. I, for one, will be sad to see it go… but who knows, maybe John will surprise us with a new issue 5 years from now…

If you've never read MCBF, don't let this chance pass you by: $2 to John Marr, PO Box 64011, San Francisco CA 94164.
