Radvocate # 13

The Radvocate # 13
79 pages, digest
$10 US

They grow up so fast. It seems like just yesterday we watched Matt's baby take it's first wobbly steps into the world. You blink, and suddenly they're all grown up. Not only is The Radvocate no longer a baby, I'm not sure we can even call it a zine anymore. Professionally bound with high octane prose, a slick cover, and complete with an ISNB number and bar code, this falls more into the literary journal category.

Gone are the little bits of combustible art filling the nooks and crannies. No more throw everything including the kitchen sink at it and see what sticks. Alas, we are left with a single pristine type font throughout it's entirety, a $10 price tag, and it's available on Amazon. I'd venture to guess he's not taking trades on this one.

( I stand corrected. Matt says, "I'd still be up for trades, anytime." For that you can use the contact form on their blog: http://www.theradvocatemagazine.bigcartel.com/contact )

There are 34 pages of poetry. I don't do poetry. The 20 or so pages of micro-fiction are great. Really great. You don't usually see this caliber of writing in a $10 publication, zine or otherwise. The non-fiction piece is great. The 20 questions type interview with Henry Rollins is okay. The cover art is awesome.

If I spent $10 on this I wouldn't feel ripped off, and that's having not even looked at the poetry.

The Radvocate #7

The Radvocate #7
32 pages, Digest
$2, £1, €1

If you’ve never read a copy of the Radvocate, this is a great issue to start with. The bulk of both the prose and poetry range from above average to very good, and there’s great art peppered throughout, with a kick-ass full color cover by Fade Hurricane.
Matt gives us another chapter in his skate-punk travelogue in which he and his French cohorts rampage through Switzerland. Photo of Vlad sleeping on the asphalt in front of the van.
Top notch writing includes micro fiction by Anthony Muni Jr, poetry by Missy Solis, some rambling stream of consciousness stuff from Kevin Yee, and Michael Kraft starts with what seems like a cheesy freshman writing exercise but ends up with a quite brilliant little vignette.. very sly, you don’t see it coming until you’re all caught up in it.

The Radvocate #1 & #2

This is a baby zine taking its first shaky steps into being. I like it. It's an open forum for pretty much anything, and it's free. There's not a ton of content yet, nor as much diversity as one would hope, but what's there is pretty good. It does what I look for in a good zine: expose me to and make me interested in things I wouldn't have though about or cared about otherwise: rollerblading culture, hoofing around Paris, riding horses along the San Andreas Fault, and the goings on of punk bands on the road, etc. While there is no intended theme, rollerblading is a reoccurring topic. Matt Lewis seems to be the driving force behind Rad, (even though it's presented as a collaboration,) and he and his friends are rollerbladers. Good energy. An ambitious project. True life adventures, drawings, cartoons, true life adventures, poetry, CD reviews, death of a loved one, and true life adventures. 24 pages each. Contribute and/or Order: theradvocatemag at gmail or smail to 3245 University Ave, San Diego, CA 92104. (They say it's free, but I say send them some trades, mail art, stamps,or even a buck or two.)
