Dungeon Degenerates

I'm working on a new series called Dungeon Degenerates. I'm using monsters from Dungeons & Dragons & similar games. Somewhat in relation to my previous post about maintaining the funk & fuzziness & mystery in our cultural output, i am so bored by the current style (which has really been going for almost 20 years or so) of Dungeons & Dragons art. Even when they were still using actual paint as opposed to photoshop to render these worlds, there has been a decidedly inhuman, overly-rendered, muted color, overly distorted & over-all gay feeling to all of it. While i think i like Arthur Rakham's work & even the work of his copiers like Brian Froud, within his style are the seeds of this infestation. The seeds of nutlessness. If you want to see an ideal form of RPG art, check out Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader, 1st Edition.

Grell
The grell levitates through the dank corridors of the dungeon hoping to paralyze its prey with the poisonous spines on its ten tentacles. The Grell's powerful beak can crack open its victim's skull so that it may feast on brains.
Grell They enjoy above all else, a potion made from crack & LSD.

Bullywog
A batrachian race of bipedal monsters which inhabit wet places - rainy forests, marshes, damp caves or virtually any other place which is shady or dark and has water nearby, for bullywugs need to dampen their skins from time to time.
Bullywog The Bullywog is the favorite food of the Umber Hulk.

Portland, OR 97210

At the core of this adrenaline induced story of personal redemption and revenge is Tamar, the beautiful, ass-kicking spokes model for Tasty Bullet, a wildly-popular "energy drink" guzzled by kids around the globe for "healthy energy" – as the Japanese ad-slogans say.  A mysterious adrenaline addiction compels her to take extreme physical risks. Her whole life is an episode of Fear Factor.

Bullet Corp., which made Tamar a superstar, continues to cover-up the secret of the unique Tasty Bullet "formula" and its link to Tamar's childhood.  Unbeknownst to her, Tamar was the perfect test result they were never able replicate, despite years of experimentation.  Bullet Corp, must hide the fact that the Tasty Bullet is disastrously defective. They insulate Tamar from the horrible truth of an impending pandemic caused by the drink and its extreme side effects. Only the Tasty Girl can reach the dark corners of Bullet Corp. to find out what's really going on behind the bubbles. Tamar's own desire to uncover her past sets her on a journey of self-discovery toward a crime that can no longer be hidden. Tamar leaves a trail of bullets across the globe in her desperate search for the truth as she faces a fearsome Teen Death Squad, The "Spiritual Terrorist" Ali Hallaj, and Tamar's greatest enemy of all – her own addiction to Tasty Bullet!

TASTY BULLET is the brainchild of two of the genre's popular creators: Arnold Pander and Jonathan Vankin.
Co-authored by Vankin and Pander and illustrated by Arnold Pander.

Jonathan Vankin is the award-winning writer and journalist of such cult classics as The Greatest Conspiracies of All Time, with nearly 100,000 sales to date.  He also penned the critically – acclaimed DC/Vertigo series "Pop Tokyo" (named to Face magazine's "10 Hottest Comics" list) and its follow-up "Bangkok", as well as scripted five of DC's popular Big Books – among other publishing milestones.

Arnold Pander, in collaboration with his brother, Jacob, is the renowned illustrator of the Eisner-nominated "Grendel – Devil's Legacy", the outrageous "Exquisite Corpse", "Accelerate", and co- creator of "Triple-X International", "Secret Broadcast", and "Batman: City of Light", for such publishers as Marvel, DC Comics, Dark Horse, Oni Press, and Image Comics.

The Pander Bros. recently completed their debut feature film, the award-winning thriller, "Selfless" <http://www.selflessthemovie.com>  which was praised as "stylish, smart and compelling" by the Oregonian and deemed, "CREEPY" by academy award nominated Director, Todd Haynes.

If you have never scoped out the subtropical vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains, August promises to be a sublime time to do so–and not only because its high altitudes provide natural relief against the summer heat. Asheville's Harvest Records–part independent record shop, part record label, part curatorial team– will mark its fifth birthday with a three-day, multi-venue musical gathering, bringing in over a dozen artists from across the nation to celebrate the organization's dual commitment to musical awareness and community-building in Western North Carolina. "Transfigurations," co-owner Mark Capon explains, "brings together the spirits of the musicians that we have brought to this city, the artists who have displayed on our walls, the sounds people have found in our shop, and the togetherness that we have attempted to breathe into the community…hour by hour, day by day." Featured acts include Akron/Family, Bonnie Prince Billy, The Books, Budos Band, Circulatory System, Mount Eerie, Espers, War on Drugs, Brightblack Morning Light, Kurt Vile, Ice Cream, Jonathan Kane, Coathangers, Villages, and Steve Gunn, along with a Saturday-afternoon panel discussion on musical documentation in the digital age by Eric Isaacson (Mississippi Records), Lance Ledbetter (Dust-to-Digital label), and Nathan Salsburg (Twos & Fews Records/Alan Lomax Archive).

City Pages Annual Comix Issue: CALL FOR ENTRIES!

Sent to you by Jack via Google Reader:

via CONSPIRE! by Kevin Cannon on 7/7/09

From the Big Time Attic blog:

It's that time of year again: City Pages is gearing up for its third annual City Pages Comix Issue and is looking for submissions. City Pages has a readership of over 50,000 discerning eyes, and is thus a great showcase for any cartoonist. And even if your cartoon isn't picked for the print edition, it will be published online. Don't forget, last year the Comix Issue won a prestigious AltWeekly Award!

Please read all of following information very carefully (a few things have changed since last year):

From Nick Vlcek, City Pages Art Editor:

This year's theme: "MINNESOTA NICE"

Deadline is Wednesday, August 5th. That's when we'll close the space and figure out what we have to run. If there's any changes that need to be made or if a work is not finished, we have one more week, but we're not any more slots past the 5th.

What we learned from last time:

There is a finite amount of space for the print edition. DO NOT FEEL LIKE YOU WERE PASSED OVER BECAUSE YOUR STUFF DIDN'T MAKE IT IN TO PRINT. We'll put everything we get up online.

Regarding above, everyone should work in a horizontal, quarter page size:

9.75″ wide by 2.5″ tall

[ Click to download a Photoshop template ]

If you want/need to do something larger, contact me first, otherwise don't necessarily expect it will run in print! (half page is 9.75″ wide by 5.4″ tall; full page is 9.75″ wide by 11.25″ tall).

Black and white JPEGS, 300dpi actual size, or larger (fit to scale).

All email should be addressed to:

nvlcek [at] citypages.com

Subject should read: CP Comics Issue

Every email needs to have the title of the piece and the credit (how you'd like your name to appear in print). We will also need a W-9 (click to download) filled out and attached to the email with your real name and address if you want to be paid. Those who sent in a W-9 last year and got paid will not have to send one if their address hasn't changed.

Payments are $25 to all, another $25 if your panel makes it into print. That is the same rate no matter what size it ends up being.

Thanks for all!

Today I went to down to the UPS store on Hawthorne and made forty copies of my latest zine. I've been going to this particular store for almost three years and they know me by name. UPS offers a great deal on copies if you buy one thousand copies. I exactly used up my last copy card today. It was kind of sad- that's probably the last time I'll see those nice folks at the store. Tomorrow I'm dropping off the latest copies of Somnambulist number Fourteen at Powell's and Reading Frenzy. And there you go Portland!! I'm off to California but hopefully I'll be able to keep Somnambulist stocked- long distance.
If you want to make sure you always get your copy of Somnambulist, sign up for a subscription! Fifteen dollars gets you four issues and a bonus issue of either number nine with a wonderful cover designed by Aron Nels Steinke or my Hip Hop book about the wonderful world of Portland Hip Hop.

Subway Stories #3: Thomas Baehr

Sometimes the simplest taglines are the most effective—by that standard, Thomas Baehr really hit the nail on the head with Pole. The Webcomic bears the rather straightforward slogan, "The Comic Strip About Penguins," and, well, one would be hard-pressed to cobble together five words that better described the whimsical little online comic.

With the Act-I-Vate strip, The End is Here, the German-born artist has adopted a far more serious storyline, also starring a cast of everyone's favorite flightless Arctic birds.

For this third installment of our Subway Stories series, Baehr abandoned his penguin friends momentarily to bring us the story of an underground busker. "No Tips, Please" was written by Avi Kotzer with art by Baehr, who assures me that it is, in fact, based on a true story.

You can check out more of Baehr's work (and plenty more penguins) at So What? The Artroom.

Eric's Week of Reviews

via Xerography Debt by noreply@blogger.com (Eric Lyden) on 7/7/09

You know what? I have not shaved since the death of Billy Mays. Is it a touching tribute to America's most beloved bearded pitchman? Is it sheer laziness and poor grooming habits? Or maybe just maybe is it a little bit of both? OK, it's mostly the second one, but I must confess a certain fondness for ol' Billy.

At any rate, every day this week I will be posting some reviews here until I either get through all the zines I have to review or I get bored. Oh, and I got me one of those fancy dan new facebook pages. It's www.facebook.com/ericfishlegs. Add me as a friend. Or don't. Either way.

INNER SWINE Vol.14 #4 December 2008. Josh Saitz who does the zine NEGATIVE CAPABILITY (www.negcap.com) told me that he recently had a dream that he, I, Jeff Somers of INNER SWINE) and R. Lee (UNDERWORLD CRAWL which is one of my favorites and you should be able to find a review of it somewhere on this site) went on a zine tour. He said it was a huge disaster because everywhere we went people to read people just thought "Who the hell are these assholes?" I mention this because this zine has just been reviewed so often that it's hard to come up with something new to say. The theme of this issue is "Kids" and he makes a convincing argument that kids do indeed suck and rule the world. There's a lot of good stuff in this issue. I even found Jeff's story about taking guitar lessons for the first time in his life at age 35 to be almost inspiring. he also wrote a brief anti-Kindle piece which reminded me of something- my Mom got a Kindle for Xmas she loves it and says she rarely even goes to the library anymore. because instead of reading books for free she can now pay $10 to read them on a little machine. I don't quite fathom how that makes any sense, but who am I to argue? 60 pages, 5.5 x 8.5, send either $2 or a trade to Jeff Somers PO Box 3024, Hoboken, NJ, 07030 mreditor@innerswine.com

SLICES- Hey, I just remembered I owed Jaime (the author of this zine) a trade. I'd better get on that. Jaime Crespo does a weekly comic strip called Slice O' Life and this zine collects what Jaime considers to be his 40 best cartoons. His strips are mainly about odd people Jaime has met over the years, many of whom seem to do a lot of drugs and die bizarre deaths. Some of the comics are funny, some were oddly touching, all are worth reading. Jaime also does a zine called TORTILLA that features more comics and stories by Jaime and like SLICES it's also worth reading. SLICES is 40 pages, 5.5 x 8.5, send $5 to Jaime Crespo, PO Box 112 San Anselmo, CA 94979 www.jaimecrespo.com

CRANKY BUDDHA #7- I like this kind of zine. It's basically a compendium of useless and bizarre information (one tid bit so useless and bizarre that I mentioned it way back in issue 7 of my own zine.) along with some reviews of books considered to be "hobo literature", the entire text of Calamity Jane's autobiography, a "stupid cop trick" that is truly stupid, kind of cruel, and I am ashamed to admit I would love to see somebody try and a review of a strange movie featuring a cameo by Col. Sanders. I enjoyed this one. 60 pages, 5.5 x 8.5, $2 or trade Danny Swank 2262 SE 39th Ave, Portland OR 97214 drdannyswank@gmail.com www.crankybuddah.com
