Colouring Outside The Lines #6

After only a measley 3 and 1/2 years wait since the last one (!!) Issue #6 of Colouring Outside The Lines zine is out...
Colouring Outside The Lines is a zine full of conversations with contemporary female artists.
This issue features interviews with:
Lauren Denitzio (USA),
Fly (USA),
Megan Kelso (USA),
Chandler O'Leary and Jessica Spring (USA),
Allyson Mitchell (Canada),
Caroline Paquita (USA),
Summer Pierre (USA),
Lindsay Starbuck (UK), and
Anke Weckmann (UK).
Cover artwork by: Amy Ng.
Each copy of Colouring Outside The Lines #6 comes with a limited edition bookmark designed and letterpress printed by Jessica Spring at Springtide Press (USA)
From the introduction:
I started this zine project back in 2005 as a way to communicate with contemporary female artists whose work I was excited by and wanted to celebrate, and also to provide a way to illuminate various corners of current female artistic and creative activity. Activity that’s not exactly in the mainstream. I’m continuing it here, in 2012, as there’s still a great deal to be said, and women to interview.
I’m interested in communicating with people, less to interview them about how or what they make, but more to ask big questions about the ‘Whys’ of their creativity, and the ‘What Fors’? This is hugely linked to individual’s lives, experiences, and politics. That to me is the interesting bit. And as such, the questions in this zine, and the conversations that have grown around them, are more about individual’s processes than of their actual production. This has led to this issue probing areas such as: confidence, accessing creativity, ‘community’, representation, art-as-activism, spreading and passing on 'good vibes', encouragement, getting stuff done, accessibility of art, working together, working outside of convention, feeling 'good enough', juggling life to make room for creativity, motivation, artistic potentials, and beyond.
A5 size zine
Date: 2012
72 pages.
Black and white pages, with colour spreads featuring art from the interviewees.
Printed on 100gsm recycled paper, with cardstock covers.

Ci Vediamo
Ci Vediamo by Hazel Newlevant
6 ½” x 5 ½”, 32 pages, $6
This is a comic book that manages to convey so much emotion and say so much in spite of the fact that it is wordless. Actually, words would have just gotten in the way. It’s beautifully crafted using alternating sheets of “regular” paper and vellum. The artwork on the vellum pages combines with the images on the proceeding pages and either adds to the previous image or creates new images altogether. As the pages are flipped and overlayed, new elements of the story emerge, which, in the words of the author, is a story of “love, loss, and moving on.” “Ci vediamo” means “we’ll see each other” in Italian. This book is a winner of a 2012 Xeric Award, and is very well done – a must see and a great addition to anyone’s collection.

The Journal of Ordinary Thought
The Journal of Ordinary Thought Spring 2012
from One Minute Zine Reviews by DJ Frederick
The Journal of Ordinary Thought
Spring 2012
$25 / 3 issues
Neighborhood Writing Alliance
1313 East 60th Street
Chicago IL 60637
This journal is obviously well funded and not the type of publication that I generally review.
The Journal of Ordinary Thought publishes reflections people make on their personal histories and everyday experiences. It is founded on the concept that that every person is a philosopher, expressing one's thoughts fosters creativity and change, and taking control of life requires people to think about the world and communicate their thoughts to others.
This is a perfect-bound, Chicago-centric literary journal of poetry and prose organized loosely around the themes of “freedom” and “liberation”. The Journal of Ordinary Thought includes exquisite black and white illustrations from the L is for Liberation Collective. The writing within feels accessible and genuine, none of it forced or pretentious. The most powerful piece that stood out is “The Don’t Die Code” by Claire Bartlett, who writes “I’m just trying to keep you from getting killed.” Helena Marie Carnes-Jeffries also hits deep pockets of childhood realities with her poem “I Was a Packaged Child”. It’s refreshing to read literature / philosophy by everyday folk instead of the workshopped writing by the pantheon of ivory tower academians who believe it is their role to carry the torch of proper literary merit for the rest of us earthlings.
I hope you understood that sentence.
